Dog Food Allergies

Dog Food Allergies

Recently I had to take my pug to the vet. He was having a myriad of problems, from an irritated eyeball and itchy pink ears to a rash appearing in his back armpits. (can you call them armpits if they are on the back legs?) The vet has suggested that it could be the chicken that is in the food we’ve been feeding the dogs recently.

In my quest to eliminate chicken from Chublet’s diet, I have been looking at the ingredients on many different types of treats, and it has been a bit disheartening. The treats that you find in regular stores are certainly unhealthy, what with all the corn products and meat byproducts. Meat is often the sixth or seventh ingredient on the list, meaning the treats have hardly any meat in them at all.

Chublet likes to eat squishy fake meat type treats, but I quickly discovered that nearly all of these have chicken. If I wanted something healthier, I would have to buy the hard biscuit type treats. If I wanted any meat that wasn’t chicken, I would have to settle for a bacon style treat where bacon was so far on the list it was kind of laughable that they bothered including it as an ingredient at all.

Tomorrow I am going to head to the health food store and see what kind of treats they can offer me. Here’s hoping!

Coats Just for Pugs!

yogi.jpg

The Pug Snuggly By YOGI is a dog coat designed specifically for pugs. If you own a pug, you probably already know how hard it is to find a coat that will fit their uniquely shaped body. Their necks and shoulders are so wide that most jackets simply do not fit.

I’ve brought home so many pug jackets and had to take them back to the store because they were too tight on my little guy’s shoulders. Or, the opposite problem of having something fit around the neck which makes it too big everywhere else. Then there are clothes that ride up and get all bunched up around him.

All this might sound like a lot of hulabaloo, but pugs tend to get chilled quickly in the winter. My problem has always been that my big girl needs long walks, but my little guy couldn’t stand the cold longer than half a block. With a coat, he plays outdoors for a long time. I think the Pug Snuggly by YOGI looks like it might just be the perfect fit.

For those of you with pugs, or similar shaped dogs like French Bulldogs, check out the Pug Snuggly by YOGI and tell me what you think.

US’ “First Dog” Bites Reporter

President Bush’s dog Barney bites a reporter, on video. Poor Barney, it looks like he was having a bad day. And people should know better than to just reach towards a dog without letting them choose to come to you for a nice sniff first. On the same note though, perhaps Barney isn’t as well socialized as he should be.

Pug-o-Ween 2008

I take my pug Chublet to the pug meetup group (check out meetup.com for one near you) and each year, they celebrate Pug-O-Ween. Of course we attended! Here’s a gallery of pics of just a few of the pugs we saw:

10 Unique Pet Dishes!

I followed a link to a neat site with various items for pet owners that I had never seen before, including this pet bowl:
chickybabebowl.jpg The site is Petego and the bowl is called the Chicky Babe. There is even a matching mat if you peruse the various sections of the site.

There are a lot of unique pet bowls out there, so I decided to put together a list of at least ten really neat pet bowls. So the chicky babe was number one. Let’s look at the rest!

wowo2raised.JPG2. Wowo 2 Raised Series Feeders from The Pawhaus Pet Boutique - These feeders are not only beautiful, but raised feeders are supposed to be good for the health of dogs by allowing them to eat with a more natural posture, and better for your home by making mealtime cleaner.

sixdayautofeeder.jpg 3. Lentek Six Day Automatic Feeder - My sister has an automatic pet feeder for her cat and it works very well to ensure that it gets fed on time all the time, and that her food is always measured out carefully and that she sticks to her diet. This type of auto feeder would work well for a small dog.

outwardhound.gif 4. Outward Hound No Spill Port-A-Bowl - I bought this set of food bowls for when I took my big dog Anna on hikes and trips. This way I could pack up some food in the bottom bowl and water in the top. They top bowl that holds the water has a neat closure to help prevent spills while you are transporting the bowls. The water bowl zips onto the top of the food bowl, so they are quite compact. Also, when the dishes aren’t being used, you can just fold them up as they are made out of fabric.

delobowl.jpg 5. Delo Dog Bowl - These bowls just look really neat! They are available in three different colors, and come in three sizes for all types of dogs. They have a handle and rubber feet to make them much easier to use, and they are washable and made out of acrylic.

goldcrownfeeder-LG.jpg 6. Gold Crown Feeder - Is your pup a prince or princess? Then perhaps they need this golden crown style feeder! I can’t say that I’ve ever seen anything quite like it!

winefeeders.jpg 7. Wine Crate Elevated Double Feeders - At Whiner & Diner you will find pet bowls that have been fashioned out of wine crates, and they are beautiful! Available in both single and double feeders, you can choose the color of the authentic wine crate used to make your elevated feeder.

hduo.JPG 8. HduO Water Dispenser - Now you can have a water cooler for the human members of the family that also serves the canine members as well! This water cooler keeps a lower bowl filled with fresh water for your pets is auto-filled with a sensor to prevent overfilling. Pretty cool!

brakefast.jpg 9. Brake Fast Bowl - This is a dog bowl designed for dogs that wolf down their food too quickly. Eating fast is linked to bloat, which can be fatal, so a bowl like this can be a lifesaver, literally. The weird pegs in the middle of the bowl force your dog to slow down. The bowl is also quite slippery on the bottom meaning the bowl will move around on the floor as they eat, making them work even harder for their meal! Poor doggies! :)

long_ear_custom.jpg 10. Long Eared Dog Bowl - Dogs with long ears have troubles when it comes to eating and drinking especially. Those ears tend to drag into their water and get all messy! With a long-eared-dog-bowl, your dogs ears should stay outside of the bowl because the opening to the bowl is smaller than the base. This link leads to a really nice site that has beautiful pottery bowls that are handmade, offering custom designs and pre-made designs. They have other dishes such as a short-nosed bowl, and they have other products as well.

After seeking out those unique dog dishes to share with you, I am overwhelmed with how many great dog bowls there are out there. Of course there are all kinds of cute dishes with unique designs, but there are some pretty innovative ideas now! I hope you enjoyed the list!

Pugoween 2

I’ve been very busy making a costume for Chublet, my pug. We have a local meetup group for pug owners at least once per month, and sometimes more than forty pugs are in attendance. It’s SO cute.

Anyway, every year they hold Pugoween. Last year, Chublet went in a store bought costume of Winnie the Pooh. He was just a tiny little pup then and he was SO CUTE.

This year though, my boyfriend made a funny suggestion for a costume. A roast turkey in a pan!!!

And boy, we are almost ready for Pugoween!

The New Adventure

Our family recently increased from being a two dog household to a four dog household when I decided to move us in with my boyfriend. Now we have a home with a 12yr old boxer/akita cross, a 9yr old english bulldog, our 7yr old lab/sheperd cross, and our 1yr old pug.

Owning four dogs is a crazy undertaking and I wouldn’t recommend it. Not only do they produce a lot of poop and hair, but it is a bit of a hassle to keep everyone in line. But they are all so darn cute.

Catch a Bubble for Dogs

catchbubble.jpg

I’m always looking for creative ways to exercise my dogs because my big girl Anna needs more than a walk around the block can offer. For awhile now, we haven’t lived close enough to a good off leash park to play with other dogs much, so it’s up to me to come up with entertainment and things to keep her mind busy.

Something that has worked before during the summer are bubbles! We used to just use regular bubble soap, but now the pet stores have caught on and actually offer flavored bubbles for your canine friends!

You can click here if you’d like to see the bubbles offered for dogs at the Crazy Pet Shop!
